Without admitting any liability on the part of the University to pay Salaries for the period of the Japanese occupation of Hongkong the Emergenoy Executive Committee is prepared to pay by agreement with H.M. Treasury a sum representing 90% of the salary that would have been due to you had the University been functioning during that period on condition that you are prepared to return to your appointment at the University should you be required to do so by a competent authority.

The deduction of 10% is made to meet the condition on which H.M. Treasury agreed to make a grant to the University for the payment of salaries.

It is understood in accepting payment that the amount is provisional only and may be subject to amendment at a later date, (when the Hongkong records are brought up to date) if it is found that an error has been made an adjustment will then be made either by paying to you any further sum found to be due to you or by your refunding any amount overpaid.
